Canvas Projects is working with Bayside CityCouncil on the design of the landmark Visitors Centre for the Yalukit WillamNature Reserve. The Visitors Centre (Gateway Budling) is the primary entranceto the Yalukit Willam Nature reserve and incudes exhibition, learning andadministration spaces to support the programmes within the reserve, including aretail offering.
The Yalukit Willam Nature Reserve Matserplan, andthe established Chain of Ponds has transformed this site from a recreationalexpanse of grasslands and trees into a thriving wetland reserve abundant withdiverse flora and active bird and wildlife populations.
The vision for the Gateway project is a facility that provides community connection to Country. This vision is realised by utilising three design strategies: REPAIR, LEARNING, ENGAGEMENT. For each strategy, a range of subjects, activities, or instruments that will be engaged in the pursuit of community connection to country.
The concept proposal seeks to utilise re-development as an instrument of repair, and the creation of a facility that provides more than it takes from its place. The proposal seeks to repair ecologies through the establishment of robust and thriving habitat. This approach is fundamental to the project brief and standing concept design, invoke a Caring for Country philosophy in visitors to inspire stewardship of both the Reserve and of our wider environment for future generations.
