Canvas was invited by HumeCity Council to develop a concept for the Stage 1 Redevelopment of the Craigieburn Sports Stadium Precinct. The project will mark the significant first stage of the Craigieburn Sports Stadium revitalisation which will make a significant impact to the local and regional sporting and recreation landscape. The concept proposes a campus approach to the precinct’s revitalisation, promoting connection with the adjacent Craigieburn Gardens and the benefits of a campus in lieu of a 'mega' stadium template too often adopted at the redevelopment of such complexes. The Campus approach prioritises pedestrian movement through and around the sports facilities, making these as much as part of the Gardens as the other facilities provided there.
The facility contains 3,000m2of indoor sports courts and associated change room and admin facilities as an extension to the existing Craigieburn Stadium. The concept design proposal also targets ESD benchmarks as industry leading for this type of facility seeking to achieve 6 Star Green star (equivalency) and Carbon Net Zero. The proposed structure adopts sustainable sourced timber for a 35m clear span engineered timber portal structure. The core structure is dressed in modules of prefabricated insulation and skin, designed for efficient assembly and disassembly at end of life.
